Triangle Water Quality

What's actually in your tap water

Every Triangle utility publishes annual water quality data. Here's what the numbers say — and why it matters for your family's health.

PFAS: "Forever Chemicals"
Linked to cancer, hormone disruption & immune issues
PFAS don't break down — they accumulate in your body over time. Studies link long-term exposure to kidney and testicular cancer, thyroid disease, reduced fertility, and weakened immune response in children. Multiple Triangle utilities have detected PFAS above the EPA's new 4 ppt limit. Standard filters don't remove them. Reverse osmosis does.
Chloramine
A disinfectant that irritates more than it protects
Wake County adds chloramine instead of chlorine — it's harder to remove and can cause skin irritation, dry eyes, and digestive discomfort with prolonged exposure. It also reacts with pipes to form byproducts. Standard carbon filters can't eliminate it. Our catalytic carbon systems are specifically designed to break it down before it reaches your tap.
9–12 ppt
PFAS levels detected in Triangle tap water
That's above the EPA's updated 4 ppt maximum contaminant level. OWASA (Chapel Hill/Carrboro) found 11 different PFAS compounds in their water — 9 remained after standard treatment. If you're on municipal water in the Triangle, the odds are high your tap water contains detectable PFAS right now.
The Fix
A whole-home system + RO eliminates both
Our catalytic carbon whole-home filter handles chloramine and sediment at the point of entry. Our under-sink reverse osmosis system removes PFAS, heavy metals, and everything else from your drinking water. Together, they cover every contaminant the EPA is concerned about — and your family gets clean water from every tap.

FAQ

Common questions

Yes — but not for hardness. Triangle municipal water is already very soft (1.4–1.7 GPG), so water softeners are largely overkill. The real issues are chloramine (the disinfectant Wake County uses, which standard carbon filters barely address) and PFAS "forever chemicals" detected above EPA limits in several Triangle utilities. Our catalytic carbon + RO bundle is built specifically for these problems.
PFAS are synthetic "forever chemicals" linked to cancer, thyroid disease, and immune suppression. They don't break down in the environment or your body. The EPA set a 4 ppt drinking water limit in 2024 — several Triangle utilities test above it. The only reliably effective removal method for drinking water is an NSF P473-certified reverse osmosis system, which is included in our complete system.
Chloramine — the disinfectant Wake County uses — requires a catalytic reaction to break down. Standard GAC (granular activated carbon) only physically adsorbs chlorine; it reduces chloramine by 20–40% at best. Catalytic carbon (like Centaur or Jacobi media) has a modified surface that chemically converts chloramine to harmless compounds. This is why we specifically use catalytic carbon, not generic carbon media.
Most installs are done in a single visit — typically 2–4 hours. The whole-home catalytic carbon system connects to your main water line near the point of entry. The under-sink RO installs under your kitchen sink with a dedicated faucet. We test everything before we leave and walk you through the system.
Absolutely. Well water is a specialty for us. We start with a comprehensive water test (included with any quote) to identify exactly what your well contains. Johnston County wells commonly have iron, manganese, high hardness, and sometimes bacteria. We build the right treatment train for your specific water — nothing more, nothing less.
Our lifetime workmanship warranty covers any defect in our installation work for as long as you own your home. If a fitting we installed leaks or a valve we plumbed fails due to our workmanship — we fix it free. Equipment manufacturer warranties are separate and vary by component (typically 5–10 years on tanks and valves).
